Chapter 10

“You two have got to be the most careful you’ve ever been in your lives,” Chance told Claire and Riley, suddenly gruff and commanding in tone. “There are a million ways to die in an abandoned mine shaft, and all we have is this shitty map to guide us.” He shook the folded map in his hand for emphasis.

“That map is not shitty! I spent all morning on that.” Claire’s hands were on her hips, and she frowned at Chance. She’d even brightened it in Photoshop, she thought with some irritation. It wasn’t as if she’d insisted on bringing the original tattered copy, like Riley had tried to—for authenticity, of course.

“We could be poisoned by the air itself,” Chance went on, as if she hadn’t spoken, “so I brought gas masks.”

“Gas masks?” Riley looked intrigued. “Dear god, it’s so…post-goth industrial punk.”

“Don’t pretend you don’t love it,” Claire said, taking the gas mask gingerly from Chance’s outstretched hand. She hesitated. “Do I have to put it on now?”

“Not until we go inside,” Chance said lightly. “Now who’s the kinky one?”

Claire let the mask dangle from one hand. “Still you.”

They walked closer to the deep, black tunnel, and Claire’s palms tingled with anxiety. Riley’s buoyant spirit of adventure and Chance’s practical awareness had carried her this far, but gazing into the darkness, she felt a sudden rush of fear. What if some rotted timber collapsed and she got knocked out? Oh god, what if Chance got knocked out? What if they fell into some filthy water and Riley’s leg got infected? What if the water was much deeper than it appeared to be? What if there was mercury in it? What if there were bats? She hadn’t really thought that much about the potential hazards, and her heart pounded in her throat.

“Maybe the map is shitty,” Claire said, hating the quiver in her voice. “Just look at it. I can’t even read some of the words, even with the brightening effects.” She wiped a trickle of sweat from her forehead. “Oh, god. We shouldn’t be doing this, Chance.”

Meanwhile, Chance had already squatted down, unzipped his backpack, and started rifling for equipment. He unraveled a rope from within and secured it around an oak tree, then sidled over to Riley, slipping the rope through his first belt loop. As he carefully threaded the rope around Riley’s hips, his hand brushed against a sliver of bare skin where Riley’s shirt had risen up, and he felt Riley shiver a little. It reminded him all too vividly of the night before.

“The last time anyone came in here looking for gold,” he said, “was about ten years ago.” He slipped the rope through the second loop and knotted it securely. “They were some teenage townies, and I had to call a search party to come get them out. Now, what that tells me is that ten years ago, this place was safe enough to not kill trespassers. But still, they got lost, and we are not going to.
